Shameful Shopping Trip for Lucas! (Part 2)

Lucas fidgeted nervously as Brenda guided him down the supermarket aisle. The fluorescent lights overhead cast a harsh glow on the shelves, making everything glaringly bright and leaving no chance he could hide what was happening. He could feel his face burning with embarrassment, but Brenda seemed blissfully unaware—or perhaps she simply didn’t care.
“What do you think, Lucas?” Brenda held up a package of bright blue diapers, their cartoonish designs mocking him with their cheerfulness. “Do these look like they’d fit you?”
Lucas glanced around wildly, his heart pounding in his chest. What if someone heard her? What if they were watching? The thought made his stomach twist into knots. “Uh, I don’t know,” he mumbled, trying to keep his voice low. “Maybe… maybe try something else?”
Brenda raised an eyebrow and set the package back on the shelf. She moved down the aisle, picking up different packages and examining them closely. Each time she paused, Lucas felt a fresh wave of humiliation. Why couldn’t they have ordered online like usual? Why did they have to come here now when so many people were around?
Finally, Brenda seemed satisfied. She gathered half a dozen packages and handed them to Lucas. “Here, hold these for me,” she instructed, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Lucas hesitated for a moment before taking the diapers. His fingers brushed against the plastic packaging, and he could almost hear the whispers of the other shoppers. He swallowed hard and forced himself to follow Brenda as she made her way to the checkout lane.
The cashier, a young woman with dark hair tied back in a ponytail, looked up as they approached. Her eyes widened slightly as she saw Lucas holding the diapers. For a moment, she seemed unsure of what to say.
“Cash or card?” she finally asked, her voice neutral.
“Card,” Brenda replied, handing over her credit card.
The cashier swiped the card and began scanning the items. Everything went smoothly until she reached the last package of diapers. Her brow furrowed as she stared at the screen. “I’m sorry,” she said after a moment, “but I need a price check on this item.” She picked up the intercom handset and pressed the button.
Lucas’s heart leaped into his throat as the static crackle of the intercom filled the store. “Price check on aisle seven, adult diaper, brand name…” Her voice trailed off as she read the label.
There was a long pause, and then the intercom clicked off. The silence that followed was deafening. Lucas could feel the eyes of everyone in the vicinity turning toward him. He wanted to shrink into the floor, to disappear entirely, but there was nowhere to hide.
A moment later, the cashier returned to her task, seemingly unfazed by the attention they had drawn. She finished ringing up the items and handed the receipt to Brenda. “Have a nice day,” she said politely, though her eyes lingered on Lucas longer than he liked.
